  • 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Keynote Address: 7:30 PM (Villanova Room, Connelly Center) Monica McDermott, Ph.D. (VU ’93) is an assistant professor of sociology at Stanford University, where she is affiliated with African and African-American Studies, the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, and Urban Studies. Her research focuses upon ways in which race and class interact in the contemporary United States. The title of Dr. McDermott’s address is “Sports, Shootings, and Scholarships: Myths of African-American Upward Mobility.” Sponsored by VU’s Center for Peace and Justice Education.
